Risks of Sending and Receiving Health Information via Text Message

By using text messaging to communicate with our office, you acknowledge and accept the inherent risks associated with sending and receiving health information through unsecured channels, such as text messages. While we strive to maintain the confidentiality of your health information, text messages are not always secure, and there is a risk that they could be intercepted, accessed, or otherwise compromised. This includes the potential for unauthorized access to your health information by third parties, which may be subject to breaches of privacy or confidentiality.

We recommend that you limit the sharing of sensitive health information (such as diagnoses, treatment plans, or prescription details) via text messaging and consider alternative, more secure means of communication when necessary.

Rules for Sending Text Messages to the Provider’s Office

  1. Non-Emergency Communications Only: Text messaging should only be used for non-urgent communication. For appointment scheduling, billing inquiries, and general questions, texting is appropriate. Do not use text messages to discuss urgent medical concerns or to request medical advice.

  2. Verification of Identity: To protect your privacy, we may require certain identity-verification procedures before responding to health-related text messages.

  3. Response Times: Responses to text messages may not be immediate. Our office will make reasonable efforts to respond to your text within a reasonable timeframe during regular business hours. However, there may be delays depending on the nature of the message or the volume of messages we receive.

  4. Restricted Topics: Certain topics, such as detailed health assessments, prescriptions, and confidential medical records, should not be discussed via text message. Please use more secure methods of communication for these matters.

Medical Emergencies

In the event of a medical emergency, do not use text messaging to contact our office. Text messaging is not an appropriate or reliable means of seeking urgent care or advice. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, you should immediately call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room.

Text messaging cannot provide the immediate and comprehensive response required in emergency situations, and delays in response could result in serious health risks.
